          Zahava was born in Antwerp in a milieu in which Yiddish was a vector of communication and Ashkenaz religious songs in Hebrew were omnipresent.

          After studying art history at Brussels Free University she went on to study classical singing with first Marianne Pousseur and then Kathelijne Van Laethem.
          At the same time, she began investigating traditional Yiddish and Judeo-Spanish song.

          She created the group Mosaic – a vocal duet singing in unison or two parts with a guitar and piano accompaniment – in 1990. A first record was released on the Sub Rosa label.

          She wanted to be an actress or a singer.


          She launched her solo career in 1992 and created the group Psamim guided by the desire to trace the course of Askhenaz songs in Hebrew and Yiddish. She selected a series of fairly unknown songs and recorded a second album on the Sub Rosa label (Ashkenaz Songs).
